Sped Talk: Trauma, Violence and School Response
What do you do when a special education or Section 504 student commits an act of violence at school, or threatens a violent act against students or staff or is a victim of threats or violence? How do you prepare students with special needs for the possibility of school violence? This session highlights a series of "real-life experience" scenarios blended with legal perspectives, focused on the following areas:< br />
Overview of legal obligations Case law regarding discipline School safety and crisis response Response to school violence through multitiered systems of support The traumatic potential of crisis events and the impact they have on individuals Ways to collaborate with community-based emergency response services How to support school staff
Attendees will gain an understanding of when and how to involve law enforcement, as well as the how to design and implement crisis response plans with consideration given to students with special needs. Special attention will be given to case law regarding aggressive students, school safety, and practical options.
At Least 51% - Meeting LRE Requirements
California law requires school districts ensure students with disabilities are educated with their nondisabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate. From full inclusion, to special day class, to "split day" options in resource specialist programs and general education with supports, school districts consistently face questions regarding how to meet this least restrictive environment (LRE) requirement. This session will give you legal and practical knowledge on how to appropriately address LRE issues in your district.
A Day in the Life: Team-Based Problem Solving
This fully-interactive session puts you in the driver's seat as we examine common situations, and dissect the different ways you and your colleagues have responded in the past and might respond in the future. Discussion will center on a wide-range of familiar topics, such as IEPs, parent requests and assessments. You will walk away with concrete solutions to real-life scenarios, and a higher confidence in your problem solving strategies.
