Special Education Legal Consortium (SELC)
Training Overview
This May, we invite you to join us for a three-part webinar series exploring the intersection of special education and school discipline. Each 60-minute session adds new dimensions: starting with the foundational legal lines that frame disciplinary practices, moving into the complex and often misunderstood process of Manifestation Determination Reviews, and culminating with inclusive, schoolwide strategies that support all learners.
Educators, administrators, and support staff are invited to join any of the individual trainings, or the complete series over three continuous weeks.
Spring 2025 Virtual Workshops
Lines and Layers: Understanding the Framework of Special Education Discipline
Wednesday, May 14, 2025 | 8:30 am - 9:30 am
Like the sketch before a painting, we need strong lines before we get started filling in the rest of the pictures — these are the legal foundations, procedural protections, and ethical framing. Before any artist begins their work, they start with a solid sketch—just as in discipline, we need a clear understanding of the legal and ethical framework to create a fair and effective system. In this session, we’ll dive into the lines that shape special education discipline and the layers that add complexity to each student’s story.
Intent, Impact & Interpretation: Getting the Full Picture in MDRs
Wednesday, May 21, 2025 | 8:30 am - 9:30 am
Manifestation Determination Reviews (MDRs) are one of the most critical—and misunderstood—moments in the discipline process for students with disabilities. In this session, we’ll take a deep dive into the “art” of MDRs: how to interpret behavior in context, honor legal protections, and ensure student rights are not painted over in moments of crisis. Using the lens of an artist, we’ll learn how to zoom in on the details (disability, behavior, IEP implementation) and zoom out to see the broader picture (school climate, bias, support systems). Because when it comes to discipline decisions, every brushstroke matters.
Blend Don’t Blur: Inclusive Discipline with Every Student in Mind
Wednesday, May 28, 2025 | 8:30 am - 9:30 am
In this session, we’ll zoom out from individual cases and take a wide-angle look at the schoolwide canvas. What happens when we stop trying to fit students into rigid frames and instead incorporate and design systems that adapt, include, and respond? Using the metaphor of mixing paint, we’ll explore how to blend supports across teams, tiers, and practices—without blurring the unique needs of students with disabilities.
