Addressing Escalated Behavior in Classrooms Without Undue Reliance on Paraprofessional Support
Event Single

Details

We want classrooms to be safe, inclusive spaces where all students can learn and staff feel supported. As classrooms grow more diverse, educators often rely heavily on paraprofessionals to manage escalated behaviors. While paraprofessionals play an important role, overreliance can hinder teacher growth, reduce classroom autonomy, and create inequities. This session explores sustainable, proactive strategies to address and de-escalate challenging behaviors without defaulting to constant paraprofessional intervention. Participants will engage in real-world scenarios and gain a toolkit of evidence-based approaches rooted in trauma-informed care, restorative practices, and positive behavioral supports. The goal is to help educators balance the complex needs of students, promote inclusion of students with disabilities in general education settings, and create safer, more supportive classrooms for all.
