Lozano Smith's Annual Special Education Legal Consortium (SELC) is here! We invite you to join us for a half-day training that is packed with three hot-topic sessions and scheduled on two different days for scheduling flexibility. Lozano Smith attorneys will kick-off the day with the popular Legal Update and share their legal insights, tips, and tools on key issues impacting school districts and students.Legal Update
Examine, analyze, and discuss the most significant court and administrative decisions, updates, and guidance issued during the last year. This will include an interactive discussion on the most critical and trending issues impacting special education. Be prepared to explore these updates in-depth and how to apply them to issues we deal with in schools every day!
Assessments That Aren't
Assessments are intended to uncover and identify a child's needs. However, there has been some confusion and disagreement as to what constitutes an "assessment" and what is instead just a rubric or tool for better understanding a child. This session will discuss when something is and is not an assessment under the law and best practices for these can-be complicated situations.
Navigating Challenging Conversations
Navigating conversations that may be challenging – for example, whether to exit a child from special education or declining an initial assessment – requires skill and finesse. In this session, hear from attorneys and a former special education administrator on what the law requires in these situations, and how to have these conversations with the goal of reaching a mutual understanding. Be prepared to leave this session thinking about these conversations differently, and with some new tips going forward!
