Parent's rights are important and need to be acknowledged but how do parent's rights affect student privacy rights and District interests? Now, more than ever, some parents are demanding notice if their child has disclosed gender identity issues, some parents are seeking to review the content of school curriculum and books retained in school libraries. These issues have dominated board meeting discussions in many communities. Can/must schools disclose a student's gender identity to parents? Can parents opt their children out of curriculum that discusses LGBTQ+ or other controversial issues? Who has ultimate control over curriculum and books in a school's libraries? What laws guide this discussion? What is the board’s role in this culture war?
