Best Practices for Student Discipline and Conducting Expulsion Hearings

2023 CASCWA State Conference
Event Single

Details

While districts are increasingly looking to reduce expulsions, there are times when expulsion is the appropriate method for a student discipline matter. From beginning administrators to veteran educational leaders, the world of expulsion is full of avoidable landmines that have the potential to cause an expulsion to be unsuccessful or to be overturned on an appeal. In addition, we are seeing an increase in the intersection of discipline of students with disabilities. Through case studies, hypotheticals and real-life examples, we will discuss manifestation determinations, disciplinary changes in placement, expulsions and expedited appeals, looking at both the legal requirements and the practical realities involved in this complicated arena. This workshop will provide suggestions for addressing many of these items in advance and outline some best practices related to expulsion procedures and conducting the hearing.

This event is reserved for school district or public agency employees only. Please contact Client Services for more information.
