Overview

Lauren R. Becker is an Associate in Lozano Smith's Sacramento office. She advises school districts in various areas related to labor and employment and student issues.

Ms. Becker is AWI (Association of Workplace Investigators) trained and has significant experience conducting prompt, thorough and effective workplace and Title IX investigations, and in serving as a Title IX Hearing Officer.

Experience

Ms. Becker has experience conducting neutral, independent workplace investigations for private and public entities into claims of harassment, discrimination, retaliation, and other misconduct.

Trained in trauma-informed forensic interviewing, Ms. Becker is highly effective in investigating Title IX sexual misconduct claims that concern both adults and minor students. Ms. Becker understands best practices in the Title IX arena, and the challenges facing institutions and involved parties when allegations arise. She has conducted investigations for K-12 districts, as well as higher education institutions.

Ms. Becker serves as a Hearing Officer for Title IX matters. In this capacity, Ms. Becker serves as the final decision-maker, completing the complaint and investigation process. She has also served as an Appeal Officer in cases where a complainant or respondent has challenged an educational institution's procedures, outcome, and/or sanction. Ms. Becker has overseen cases involving dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and incapacitation. She has experience questioning parties using trauma-informed techniques, managing cross-examination, making admissibility and relevance decisions, and issuing well-reasoned decisions.

Ms. Becker has presented trainings on various issues related to Title IX investigations, including trauma-informed interviewing techniques and the impact of the "Me Too" movement on Title IX investigations.

Education

Ms. Becker earned her law degree from the University of California, Davis School of Law where she was Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Juvenile Law and Policy. She also served as President of Advocates for Youth Justice and was a member of the Trial Practice Honors Board. Ms. Becker earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors in Comparative Literature and French from the University of California, Davis.
