It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of our friend and colleague, Noel Shumway. Noel passed away on Sunday, October 28 after a battle with leukemia.

Noel dedicated his life to his family and supporting public education. His first journey as an advocate for education spanned 19 years. He tirelessly served as a Director of Administrative Service, Business Manager, and Vice President for school districts and colleges including at the K-12, community college, and university levels. In 1992, he started his second professional journey as an attorney when he joined a law firm in Northern California. In December 2008, Noel joined all of us here at Lozano Smith.

“For those who did not know Noel well, he was many things,” said Harold Freiman, Partner at Lozano Smith. “He was a respected attorney, devoted family person, and just an all-around good guy. We knew he’d be a great fit for our firm culture, and he was. He will be missed!”

“When I started with Lozano Smith in the Santa Rosa office, Noel was one of my first impressions of the firm,” said Steve Ngo, Senior Counsel at Lozano Smith. “His kindness readily distracted you from his brilliance and experience.”

“Noel devoted his career to helping public schools resolve difficult issues with his expert legal advice and representation.  What Noel’s clients, our firm, and I will miss the most though is Noel’s caring friendship.  He was very sweet, down to earth, and a great mentor.  I will miss him.” said Karen Rezendes, Managing Partner of Lozano Smith.

Throughout his time at Lozano Smith, Noel’s practice included school law with special training and experience in labor relations, arbitrations, unfair labor practice charges, personnel matters board governance issues and Brown Act issues. Noel was known for this compassion, kindness, integrity and brilliance as a lawyer. On behalf of Lozano Smith, thank you for the condolences and your continued support.  Noel will forever be missed and remembered as an inspiration for us all.
