Michael E. Smith is a Founding Partner of Lozano Smith. In addition to his General Counsel experience in all aspects of Education law, Mr. Smith offers specific expertise including, but not limited to, labor and personnel issues, student discipline matters, constitutional questions involving religion, free speech, and search and seizure. Dr. Eric Prater has been with the SLCSD since 2010 and has lead the district to state and national recognition as an exemplary school district. The joint workshop will review, from a case study perspective, how the SLCSD developed a model program to balance a district's legal responsibilities and community pressures when dealing with controversial issues. You will Learn how to best prepare for and respond to controversy in a way that avoids litigation, including a review of student, parent, and staff free speech, and religious expression rights. Leave with a framework for how to manage a crisis to help ensure that controversies become teachable moments of civil discourse for parents, students, staff, and the community.
