Controversial religious expression. Political controversies. Hate speech. They all have one thing in common: the need to balance legal and community pressures, while ensuring student and staff safety and protecting the rights of all groups. This workshop walks through a case study and model program that culminates with a student senate, a common ground advisory task force, and a revised LCAP. Learn how to best prepare for and respond to controversy in a way that avoids litigation, including a review of student and staff free speech and religious expression rights. Leave with a framework for how to manage a crisis to help ensure that controversies become teachable moments of civil discourse for parents, students, staff, and the community. This event is reserved for school district or public agency employees only.
