CASBO Workshop Series,SPED

The (Risky) Business of Special Education!
Event Single

Details

This interactive workshop explores legal and practical questions related to the "when and how" CBOs typically get involved in special education matters and how CBOs can best assist the local educational agency when special education matters arise. Often a CBO's first interaction with a special education matter occurs during settlement discussions, which may raise a multitude of questions relating to settlement terms, such as:
• Costs to the local educational agency,
• Business office timelines and turnaround capabilities,
• Litigation costs and risks, and how to minimize same, and
• Fiscal and liability implications.

These types of issues are frequently confronted by special education, business, and risk management staff, who may be experienced in one specific subject area, but may require extra assistance and guidance in the other.

This workshop will inform you about the most common and universal legal concerns and issues that you are likely to encounter as a CBO pertaining to special education. You will leave this workshop having been presented with real-world examples of settlement implications related to school finance and impact on business office, practice pointers on settlement terms taking into consideration fiscal year, an understanding of mediation, due process complaints, and 10-day statutory offers of settlement, and litigation scenarios, showing the vast and complicated issues arising in this landscape.

This event is reserved for school district or public agency employees only. Please contact Client Services for more information.
