Protecting Students and Staff: The Legal Implications of Permitting Firearms on Campus
Event Single

Details

Firearm-related violence on school grounds is a concern across the country. More than 30 states have considered or passed legislation addressing possession of firearms on school grounds. Where it is permitted, school officials are charged with making informed decisions, such as whether to permit it all and, if so, who to allow and what requirements to impose. The issue has significant policy, pedagogical and legal implications. This presentation outlines the legal implications, including the scope of schools' obligation to provide a safe environment for students and staff, potential individual and school liability, and risk management. It also offers a framework for evaluating these important decisions.
